An air cooler, taken apart to show what we make

One bay of an induced-draft air cooler (a fin-fan): an 8 ft wide bundle of 24 ft finned tubes under two 7 ft fans, taken apart the way a fitter does it. The nozzle flange nuts spin off and the piping pulls away, the header plugs unscrew, the motors, drive mounts, fans, fan rings and plenum lift off, the cover plate comes off the far header, and the frame comes off its anchor bolts. Every plug, stud, nut and bolt we make is in colour. It shows one plug header and one cover-plate header so you can see both; a real bundle normally has the same type at both ends. Press Solid view for a steel model, or Cutaway to see inside the plug header: tubes in the tubesheet, the pass partition, and a plug and gasket opposite every tube.

    Plug header

    Header plugs

A threaded shoulder plug and gasket opposite every tube: 138 of them, 1-1/8 in.-12 UNF with a 1-3/8 in. hex for 1 in. tubes. Pull one to inspect, clean or plug a single tube.

    Nozzle flange studs & nuts

Bolt the inlet and outlet piping to the header nozzles: twelve 3/4 in. studs per flange on a 10-5/8 in. bolt circle (ASME B16.5 Class 300, NPS 6), each with two heavy hex nuts.

    Fans & structure

Fan, fan ring & drive bolting

Fan rings to the plenum, blades clamped in the hubs, motors and drive mounts held down.

    Structural bolts & nuts

Beam-to-column connections of the bay's steel frame: 3/4 in. heavy hex structural bolts with hardened washers and nuts.

    Anchor bolts

Four 3/4 in. rods cast into each pier, holding the column base plates down with plate washers and heavy hex nuts.

    Cover-plate header

    Cover plate studs & nuts

Hold the removable cover plate on the header flange; off comes the plate and every tube end is open.

A generic 8 ft by 24 ft bay, not any maker's design. The nozzle flanges and their studs follow ASME B16.5; the tube size and pitch, plug size, header plate thicknesses, fan coverage and tip clearance follow API 661 and common practice. The header box, plenum, fan, drive and frame shapes are illustrative, and the cover plate, fan, drive and structural bolt counts and sizes are typical. Your drawings govern. We manufacture to your drawings and specifications.

Drawn to API 661 (air-cooled heat exchangers: header plate thicknesses, plugs, fan coverage and tip clearance), ASME B16.5 (Class 300 nozzle flanges and studs), and RCSC and AISC practice for the structural bolts and anchor rods.
