A swing check valve, taken apart to show what we make

An 8-inch Class 300 bolted-cover swing check valve, taken apart the way a fitter does it: the drain and bleed plugs come out, the end flange nuts spin off and the line flanges pull away, the cover nuts come off and the cover lifts, then the hinge bracket is unbolted and the hinge, arm and disc lift out through the top to be stripped on the bench. The bolting, pins and plugs we make are in colour. Press Solid view for a steel model, or Cutaway to see the disc, hinge and seat inside.

What's highlighted, and where it goes

    Valve

    Cover studs & nuts

Clamp the bolted cover to the body over the cover gasket: the valve's main pressure-containing bolting. Twelve studs, each with two heavy hex nuts.

    Lifting eye bolt

Screwed into the top of the cover so it can be lifted off safely.

    Bleed plug

NPS 3/4 threaded plug in the cover, opened to vent trapped pressure before the cover nuts are slackened.

    Drain plug

NPS 3/4 threaded plug in a boss low on the body, to drain the valve before it is opened up.

    Internals

    Hinge pin

The machined pin the hinge arm swings on, through the hinge bracket lugs, kept in by a washer and split pin. A regular wear part at overhaul.

    Hinge bracket studs & nuts

Bolt the hinge bracket to a boss inside the body, under the cover; the nuts are locked so they can't work loose.

    Disc nut & lock pin

Hold the disc on the hinge arm, free enough to square itself on the seat, with a pin through the nut to lock it.

    Line

    End flange studs & nuts

Bolt the valve into the pipeline: twelve 7/8 in. studs per end flange on a 13 in. bolt circle (ASME B16.5 Class 300, NPS 8), each with two heavy hex nuts.

A generic 8 in. Class 300 valve, not any maker's design. The end flanges, end studs and gaskets follow ASME B16.5 and B16.20, the face-to-face length follows ASME B16.10 and the plug size follows ASME B16.34; the body, cover, hinge and disc shapes are illustrative, and the cover, hinge bracket and disc bolting sizes and counts are typical. Some designs hang the hinge from the cover or carry the hinge pin through the body wall instead of a bolted bracket. Your drawings govern. We manufacture to your drawings and specifications.

Drawn to ASME B16.5 (end flanges and studs), ASME B16.10 (face-to-face length), ASME B16.20 (flange gaskets) and ASME B16.34 (plug connections), in the style of an API 594 Type B and API 6D bolted-cover swing check valve.
