Outlet gate mounting bolts and nuts, gate shaft and lock hardware, hatch hinge pins and hold-down bolts, running board, safety appliance, brake bracket, draft gear and truck bolting, made in Houston to your drawings and specifications.
A three-bay covered hopper of about 5,200 cubic feet and 286,000 lb gross rail load, with 13 × 42 in. gravity outlet gates and a trough hatch, taken apart the way a car shop does it: the gate nuts spin off and the gates drop, the hatch covers are unpinned, the running boards, ladder treads, end platforms and handrails come off, then the brake equipment, couplers and draft gear, and the carbody lifts off its trucks, which are stripped last. The bolting we make is in colour. Press Solid view for a steel model, or Cutaway to see the slope sheets, two bays and the centre gate in section.
A ring of bolts clamps each gravity outlet gate's frame to the flange round the bottom of its hopper, over a gasket: 64 per gate on the pattern drawn here (a 32-hole pattern is also made), three gates per car. Gates are changed and rebuilt often.
The through bolts that fix the capstans to each gate's drive shaft, and the pivot bolts for the door locks. Counts are typical.
A headed pin with a cotter through each hinge of the four trough hatch covers: three per cover, typical.
Swing eye bolts with nuts that pull each cover down onto its seal, with their pivot pins: three per cover, typical.
Bolt the running boards (roof walk) down to their saddles on the roof: two per saddle, typical.
Ladder treads, end platforms and end handrails, fastened as 49 CFR Part 231 requires with not less than 1/2 in. bolts, nuts outside where possible, or two-piece fasteners or rivets.
Hold the hand brake to its board and the brake cylinder, reservoir and control valve to their brackets. Counts are typical.
The flat cross key that ties each coupler to its yoke through the centre sill, and the retainer pins that keep it in.
Clamp the carrier plate that holds the yoke and draft gear up in each stub centre sill: eight per end, typical.
Bolt each body centre plate up to the centre sill at the body bolster: four per plate, typical.
Two bolts hold each side bearing down on the truck bolster, typical.
Typical truck brake hardware: headed pins with cotters joining the truck levers to the brake beams and rods.

The car's capacity, gross rail load, overall length, width and height, the 13 × 42 in. outlet gate with its 64-hole mounting flange and 10-1/2 in. height, the 34-1/2 in. coupler height, the track gauge and the 49 CFR Part 231 fastening rules follow published figures; the gate bolt spacing is drawn evenly round the published mounting frame. The carbody, slope sheets, gate frame, hatch covers, running boards, ladders, brake equipment, draft gear and trucks are illustrative typical proportions, and every other bolt count and size is typical. Your drawings govern. We manufacture to your drawings and specifications.
Drawn to car builders' published dimensions for a 5,200 cu ft covered hopper, outlet gate makers' published figures for the 13 × 42 in. gate and its 64-hole mounting flange (the gate standard AAR S-233 is quoted only as those makers cite it), and 49 CFR Part 231 for the fastening of ladders, handholds, end platforms, running boards and the hand brake.
