An elevated flare stack, taken apart to show what we make

A self-supported elevated flare with a 30-inch riser in flanged sections and Class 150 flanges throughout, taken apart the way a crew does it: the nuts spin off and the flare tip lifts off the molecular seal with its pilots, the seal and the riser sections part from the top down, the platform, ladder and pilot lines unbolt, the knock-out drum's piping and manway cover come off, and the stack and drum lift off their anchor bolts. The bolting we make is in colour. Press Solid view for a steel model, or Cutaway to see inside the seal, the riser and the drum. The riser, tip and drum are drawn shorter than life so the joints can be seen.

What's highlighted, and where it goes

    Flare tip & pilots

Flare tip & seal flange studs & nuts

Twenty-eight 1-1/4 in. studs on each 30-inch Class 150 flange (ASME B16.47 Series A, 36 in. bolt circle): the tip onto the molecular seal and the seal onto the riser. The tip joint is double-nutted, and is broken whenever a burnt tip is changed.

    Pilot & igniter flange bolting

The flanged pilot head on each of the three pilots (NPS 2), and the pilot gas and igniter line breaks beside the seal (NPS 1), all ASME B16.5 Class 150.

    Pilot & igniter line U-bolts

Hold the three pilot gas lines and three igniter lines, all 1-inch pipe, to stand-off brackets down the riser.

    Riser & access

Riser section flange studs & nuts

Twenty-eight 1-1/4 in. × 9-1/4 in. studs, each with two heavy hex nuts, at every flanged joint between riser sections. They hold the gas in and carry the wind bending in the stack.

    Platform & ladder bolting

Service platform brackets and caged ladder lengths bolted to clips welded on the riser.

    Knock-out drum & header

Flare line flange studs & nuts

The 30-inch Class 150 joints at the stack inlet, the drum outlet and the header inlet, twenty-eight studs each, plus the 4-inch drum drain.

KO drum manway studs & nuts

Twenty 1-1/4 in. × 6-3/4 in. studs on the 24-inch Class 150 blind flange at the end of the drum (ASME B16.5, 29-1/2 in. bolt circle).

    Foundation

Stack anchor bolts, nuts & washers

Sixteen anchor bolts through the base ring and anchor chairs, each with a plate washer and double nuts: the main structural fasteners holding the stack down against wind. Shown at 2 in.; the structural design sets the size and count.

    Drum saddle anchor bolts

Four per saddle hold the knock-out drum to its piers; one saddle is slotted so the drum can slide.

A generic 30 in. self-supported flare, not any maker's design, with the riser, the tip and the knock-out drum drawn shorter than life so the joints can be seen. The riser, seal, tip and flare line flanges, their studs and their gaskets follow ASME B16.47 Series A, B16.5 and B16.20 at Class 150; three pilots, flanged tip and pilot connections and double nuts at the tip follow API 537 and IOGP S-722 practice. The stack, seal, tip, pilot, platform, ladder and drum shapes are illustrative, and the anchor bolt, U-bolt, platform, ladder and saddle bolt sizes and counts are typical: the structural design for your site's wind and seismic loads sets them. Your drawings govern. We manufacture to your drawings and specifications.

Drawn to ASME B16.47 Series A and ASME B16.5 (Class 150 flanges and studs), ASME B16.20 (gaskets) and ASME B36.10 (pipe), and laid out along the lines of API Standard 537 and IOGP S-722 for flares.
