A freight car's truck and coupler, taken apart to show what we make

One end of a 100-ton (286,000 lb gross rail load) freight car on 36-inch wheels and 6-1/2 × 9 journals: the three-piece truck, the coupler and draft gear, the air brake equipment, the hand brake and the safety appliances. Boxcars, gondolas, hoppers, flat cars, centerbeams, well cars and auto carriers all share this hardware. It comes apart the way a car shop does it: the key retainer and draft key come out and the coupler and draft gear follow, the brake pins come out, the car end is lifted off the centre bowl, the side bearings come off, the frame keys come out and the wheelsets roll out, the end caps and bearings come off the journals, the springs and wedges come out and the side frames slide off the bolster, then the brake equipment and safety appliances come off the underframe. The fasteners we make are in colour. Press Solid view for a steel model.

What's highlighted, and where it goes

    Truck

    Roller bearing end cap screws

Three cap screws through each axle end cap and its locking plate into the axle end, the plate's tabs bent flat against the heads: 1-1/8 in.-7 on the AAR Class K (6-1/2 × 9 in.) bearing drawn here. 12 per truck, 24 per car.

    Frame key bolts & nuts

Hold a frame key under each pedestal jaw, 1/16 to 3/16 in. below the bearing cup, so the side frame and wheelset stay together. One bolt and nut per journal, typical.

    Side bearing bolts & nuts

Bolt the two constant-contact side bearings to their pads on the truck bolster. Two per bearing, typical.

    Centre pin

The pin through the body centre plate into the truck bolster that keeps the truck located under the car.

    Brake beam & lever pins

Headed pins with cotters that join the truck levers, brake beam struts, bottom rod, top rod and cylinder lever.

    Coupler & draft gear

    Draft key & retainer bolt

The flat key through the centre sill, yoke and coupler shank that ties a Type E coupler to its draft gear, and the bolt that keeps it in. The coupler centre is at most 34-1/2 in. above the rail (49 CFR 231.31).

Yoke & draft gear carrier bolts

Clamp the carrier plate that holds the yoke and draft gear up in the 24-5/8 in. pocket of the centre sill. Eight shown, typical.

    Coupler carrier wear plate bolts

Hold down the wear plate the coupler shank rides on at the striker. Four shown, typical.

    Uncoupling lever bracket bolts

Bolt the two brackets that carry the uncoupling lever to the end sill.

    Air brake & hand brake

    Brake cylinder mounting bolts

Bolt the brake cylinder's mounting pad up to its bracket under the car. Four shown, typical.

    Reservoir strap bolts

Bolt the ends of the two straps that carry the combined reservoir up to brackets under the car.

Control valve & pipe bracket studs & nuts

Three studs and nuts hold each portion of the control valve to the pipe bracket, and three more hang the bracket from the car, typical.

    Brake pipe flange bolts

Two bolts draw up each flanged fitting on the 1-1/4 in. brake pipe, branch pipe tee and pipe bracket.

    Hand brake mounting bolts

Four bolts (typical) hold the hand brake housing to its mounting plate on the end of the car.

    Safety appliances

    Safety appliance bolts

Fasten the ladder, handholds, sill steps and end platform to the car. 49 CFR 231 calls for bolts of not less than 1/2 in., nuts outside where possible, or rivets; handholds are at least 5/8 in. in diameter with at least 2 in. of clearance.

A generic 100-ton freight car end, not any builder's, lessor's or railroad's design. The journal bearing size, end cap screw thread, draft gear pocket length, track gauge, coupler height and safety appliance minimums follow published figures; the AAR figures are taken from bearing and draft gear makers' public literature, not from the AAR manual itself. The truck, coupler, draft gear, brake equipment, hand brake and underframe shapes are illustrative typical proportions, and every bolt count and every other bolt size is typical. Your drawings govern. We manufacture to your drawings and specifications.

Drawn to the AAR Class K (6-1/2 × 9 in.) journal bearing and end cap screw figures in a bearing maker's public data sheet and installation guide (secondary sources for the AAR Manual of Standards and Recommended Practices), the 24-5/8 in. draft gear pocket given in draft gear makers' public catalogues, standard 56-1/2 in. track gauge, and 49 CFR Part 231 for coupler height and the safety appliance dimensions and fasteners.
