A heat exchanger, taken apart to show what we make

A TEMA type AES shell-and-tube exchanger, size 23-192: a 23-1/4 in. shell with 16 ft tubes, a channel with a removable cover and a split-ring floating head, flanged to Class 150. It comes apart the way a turnaround crew opens it: the nozzle flange nuts spin off and the piping pulls clear, then the channel cover, the channel, the shell cover and the floating head come off in turn, and the tube bundle is drawn out of the shell last and lifted clear. The bolting we make is in colour. Press Solid view for a steel model, or Cutaway to see the tubes, baffles and floating head inside.

What's highlighted, and where it goes

    Bolted joints

    Channel cover studs & nuts

Clamp the flat channel cover to the channel: twenty 1-1/4 in. studs on a 29-1/2 in. bolt circle (ASME B16.5 Class 150, NPS 24), each with two heavy hex nuts. Off at every inspection to open the tube side.

    Girth flange studs & nuts

Through the channel flange, the stationary tubesheet and the shell flange, clamping all three with a gasket on each side of the tubesheet.

    Collar studs

Every fourth girth stud: a collar seated in the tubesheet holds it to the shell flange, so the channel comes off without breaking the shell-side gasket.

    Shell cover studs & nuts

Hold the dished shell cover on the rear shell flange, closing in the floating head.

    Floating head studs & nuts

Inside the shell cover, pulling the floating head cover against the split backing ring behind the floating tubesheet.

    Nozzle flange studs & nuts

Bolt the piping to the two shell nozzles (NPS 8) and the two channel nozzles (NPS 6): eight 3/4 in. studs per flange, ASME B16.5 Class 150.

    Tube bundle

    Tie rods, spacers & nuts

Threaded into the stationary tubesheet, with spacer tubes between the baffles and nuts behind the last plate, holding the baffle cage together.

    Lifting & supports

    Lifting eye bolts

In tapped holes in the rims of the channel cover and the channel flanges, for slinging them clear.

    Anchor bolts

Hold the two saddles to the foundation piers. One saddle is slotted so the shell can grow with heat.

A generic TEMA type AES exchanger, size 23-192, not any maker's design. The nozzle flanges and their studs follow ASME B16.5 Class 150, and the shell and nozzle pipe follow ASME B36.10. The channel cover and girth joints are drawn to the B16.5 Class 150 NPS 24 flange, as small pipe-shell exchangers sometimes are; larger units have girth flanges designed for the job. The shell cover, floating head, tubesheets, baffles, tie rods, saddles and anchor bolts are illustrative, and their bolt counts are typical. Your drawings govern. We manufacture to your drawings and specifications.

Drawn to ASME B16.5 (Class 150 flanges and studs), ASME B36.10 (pipe sizes and wall thicknesses) and the TEMA standards (exchanger type, size and bundle construction).
