A hydroprocessing reactor, opened up to show what we make

A heavy-wall hydrotreater / hydrocracker reactor on its skirt: 10 feet inside diameter and 33 feet tangent to tangent, with a 7-1/2 inch shell wall, three catalyst beds and Class 1500 ring-joint flanges throughout. It is opened up the way a turnaround crew does it: the inlet flange nuts spin off and the elbow lifts away, the quench lines and thermocouples come off the shell, the manway cover lifts off its studs, the inlet diffuser comes out through the manway, each bed is opened and unloaded from the top down, the outlet line is unbolted, and the reactor lifts off its anchor bolts. The bolting we make is in colour. Press Solid view for a steel model, or Cutaway to see the wall thickness, the catalyst beds and the trays, support grids and quench zones inside.

    Manway & main nozzles

    Manway cover studs & nuts

Sixteen 3-1/2 in. × 25-1/2 in. studs on a 39 in. bolt circle clamp the forged cover onto the 24-inch top manway over an R79 ring gasket (ASME B16.5 Class 1500, NPS 24). The largest joint on the reactor, opened at every catalyst change and usually tensioned hydraulically.

    Inlet nozzle studs & nuts

Sixteen 2 in. × 15-1/4 in. studs bolt the inlet elbow to the 12-inch nozzle on the manway cover (Class 1500, ring R58). Broken first, so the elbow can be lifted clear.

    Outlet nozzle studs & nuts

Sixteen 2-1/2 in. × 18-1/2 in. studs on the 16-inch outlet flange (Class 1500, ring R67), which sits outside the skirt at the end of the outlet nozzle.

    Shell & head nozzles

    Quench nozzle studs & nuts

Eight 1-1/4 in. × 7-3/4 in. studs on each 4-inch Class 1500 quench connection between the beds.

Catalyst unloading nozzle studs & nuts

Twelve 1-3/8 in. × 10-1/2 in. studs hold the blind flange on each 6-inch Class 1500 dump nozzle: one at the foot of each upper bed and two on the bottom head, out through the skirt.

    Thermocouple nozzle studs & nuts

Eight 7/8 in. × 5-3/4 in. studs on each 2-inch Class 1500 flange carrying a thermocouple assembly into a bed, two per bed.

    Internals & foundation

    Internals bolting

Holds the inlet diffuser, the distribution tray decks and manway panels, the bed support grids on their beams, the quench mixing boxes and the outlet collector, all bolted in sections that pass through the manway. Typically austenitic stainless.

    Skirt anchor bolts & nuts

Twenty-four anchor bolts cast into the foundation and up through the base ring and anchor chairs, each with a washer and heavy hex nut. Shown at 3 in.; the structural design sets the size and count.

A generic 10 ft × 33 ft reactor, not any maker's design. The manway, nozzle and blind flanges, their studs and their ring gaskets follow ASME B16.5 and B16.20 at Class 1500. The vessel size, the wall thicknesses, the forged nozzle shapes, the manway cover carrying the inlet nozzle, the skirt, the anchor chairs and every internal are illustrative, typical proportions; the internals and anchor bolt sizes and counts, and all bolting materials, are typical. Reactors like this often have purpose-designed flanges with larger studs. Your drawings govern. We manufacture to your drawings and specifications.

Drawn to ASME B16.5 (Class 1500 ring-joint flanges, blind flanges and stud bolts), ASME B16.20 (ring-joint gaskets), ASME B36.10 (pipe) and ASME B16.9 (elbows); the bolting materials are named to ASTM A193, A194 and F1554.
