A launch pad, taken apart to show what we make

A generic orbital launch pad: a steel launch mount ring with four hold-down posts on a concrete stand over the flame trench, a 22.5 m bolted steel service tower with two swing arms and a lightning mast, an NPS 8 cryogenic propellant line and an NPS 12 water-deluge line, with a plain 3 m rocket standing on the mount. It comes apart in the reverse of the order it was built: the rocket lifts away, the hold-down post nuts spin off and the posts lift off their studs, the launch mount ring comes off its anchor studs, the U-bolts and flange nuts come off and the pipe spools are drawn apart, the swing arm hinge pins are drawn, the bracing and column splices are unbolted and the tower goes up lift by lift, and last the column base plates come off their anchor bolts. The bolting and pins we make are in colour. Press Solid view for a steel and concrete model.

What's highlighted, and where it goes

    Launch mount

Hold-down post base studs & nuts

Eight studs through the base plate of each hold-down post into the launch mount ring, each with a hardened washer and a heavy hex nut. Four posts shown; 1-1/4 in. studs shown. Count and size are typical and follow the launch mount drawing.

Launch mount ring studs & nuts

A circle of 36 anchor studs cast into the concrete stand, up through the ring's bottom flange, each with a plate washer and a heavy hex nut. 1-1/2 in. shown; ASTM F1554 Grade 105 or A193 B7 is typical.

    Service tower

Tower anchor bolts, nuts & washers

Eight 1-1/2 in. anchor rods at each of the four column bases, typically ASTM F1554 Grade 55 or 105. The base plate holes are 2-5/16 in. and each rod carries a 3-1/2 in. plate washer, 1/2 in. thick, under a heavy hex nut, following the AISC Steel Construction Manual.

    Column splice bolts

7/8 in. heavy hex structural bolts to ASTM F3125 Grade A325 or A490 with A563 DH nuts and F436 hardened washers, through a splice plate on each column flange: sixteen per splice shown, in 15/16 in. standard holes.

    Bracing bolts

Four 7/8 in. structural bolts at each end of every diagonal brace, through the brace end plate and the gusset on the column.

Swing arm hinge pins & nuts

Two machined, headed hinge pins per swing arm, through the arm's lugs and the clevis brackets on the tower column, each held by a heavy hex nut. 2-1/2 in. diameter shown; size and material follow the arm drawing.

    Propellant & water lines

Cryogenic line flange studs & nuts

Eight 3/4 in. studs, 4-1/4 in. long, with two heavy hex nuts each, at every raised-face joint in the NPS 8 Class 150 stainless line (ASME B16.5: 11-3/4 in. bolt circle, 7/8 in. holes). Low-temperature bolting such as ASTM A320 L7 or B8 with A194 nuts is typical.

Deluge line flange studs & nuts

Twelve 7/8 in. studs, 4-3/4 in. long, with two heavy hex nuts each, at every joint in the NPS 12 Class 150 deluge main (ASME B16.5: 17 in. bolt circle, 1 in. holes). ASTM A193 B7 with A194 2H nuts, coated, is typical.

    Pipe support U-bolts

A U-bolt with two nuts at each pipe support: 5/8 in. rod on the NPS 8 line and 3/4 in. rod on the NPS 12 line are typical, in galvanised carbon steel or stainless.

A generic launch pad, not any real pad, vehicle or operator's design. The shapes are illustrative typical proportions: the rocket, the stand, trench and deflector, the launch mount ring and hold-down posts, the tower, swing arms, lightning mast and pipe routes. The pipe flanges and their studs follow ASME B16.5 Class 150; the structural bolts follow ASTM F3125 and ASME B18.2.6; the anchor rod holes and plate washers follow the AISC Steel Construction Manual. Every count, and the sizes and grades of the hold-down studs, ring studs, hinge pins and U-bolts, are typical. Your drawings govern. We manufacture to your drawings and specifications.

Drawn to ASME B16.5 (Class 150 flanges and studs, NPS 8 and NPS 12), ASTM F3125 and ASME B18.2.6 (heavy hex structural bolts), the AISC Steel Construction Manual (anchor rod holes and plate washers), ASTM F1554 (anchor rods) and ASTM A320 (low-temperature bolting), with the general arrangement taken from public NASA descriptions of launch mounts, hold-down posts and umbilical towers.
