A deep-well turbine pump, pulled and taken apart to show what we make

A deep-well line-shaft turbine pump as it stands on an irrigation well: a vertical hollow-shaft motor on a cast discharge head, an 8-inch flanged column with a 1-1/2 inch line shaft running down inside it, and a three-stage 12-inch bowl assembly with its suction bell and strainer at the bottom. The column is drawn short, three lengths of under two feet, where a real setting has 5 or 10 foot lengths and many of them. It comes apart the way a pump crew pulls a well: the adjusting nut and gib key come off and the driver is lifted, the head shaft is unscrewed, the discharge flange is unbolted, and the head is lifted and set aside. Then the string comes up one joint at a time: the flange nuts come off, the column is raised to bare the shaft coupling, the shaft is unscrewed and the length is set aside. Last, the bowls come out of the well and are stripped from the top, cap screws, bowls, collets and impellers. The bolting and turned parts we make are in colour. Press Solid view for a steel model, or Cutaway to see the shaft and stuffing box in the head, a bearing retainer in a column joint and an impeller in its bowl.

What's highlighted, and where it goes

    At the surface

Top adjusting nut, lock screw & gib key

On top of the hollow-shaft driver. The key drives the head shaft, the nut carries the rotating string and sets the impeller lift, and the lock screw holds the setting.

    Driver-to-head bolts

Four 5/8 in. bolts on a 14-3/4 in. bolt circle (NEMA P-base, 16-1/2 in. base) hold the motor or gear drive on the discharge head.

Stuffing box & packing gland bolting

Cap screws hold the stuffing box to the head; two studs and nuts draw the split gland down on the packing.

    Discharge flange studs & nuts

Eight 3/4 in. studs on an 11-3/4 in. bolt circle (ASME B16.5 Class 150, NPS 8), each with two heavy hex nuts.

    Discharge head anchor bolts

Cast into the pad, with a nut and washer at each corner of the head's base plate.

    Column & line shaft

    Head-to-column flange bolting

Hangs the top column flange, and everything below it, from the underside of the discharge head.

    Column flange bolting

Eight at every column joint, clamping the flanges over the bearing retainer. A deep setting has a joint every 5 or 10 feet.

    Line shaft couplings

Left-hand threaded sleeves, machined from solid bar, that join the lengths of 1-1/2 in. line shaft end to end.

    Shaft sleeve set screws

Lock the wear sleeve to the top shaft where it runs in the packing.

    Bowl assembly

    Bowl cap screws

Bolt each bowl to the next and the top bowl to the discharge case.

    Impeller taper collets

Split taper sleeves that lock each impeller to the pump shaft.

    Suction bell & strainer bolts

Hold the bottom bowl to the suction bell and the strainer basket to the bell.

A generic deep-well line-shaft pump, not any maker's design, with the column drawn much shorter than a real setting. The discharge flange, its studs and drilling follow ASME B16.5 Class 150; the pipe follows ASME B36.10; the driver bolt circle follows the NEMA P-base pattern. The head, driver, bowls, impellers, suction bell, strainer, bearing retainers and stuffing box are illustrative typical proportions; the column flanges are drawn on the Class 150 pattern, where makers use their own; and the anchor, column, bowl, stuffing box, suction bell and strainer bolt counts and sizes are typical. Your drawings govern. We manufacture to your drawings and specifications.

Drawn to ASME B16.5 Class 150 (discharge flange, its studs and drilling, which AWWA C207 Class D shares), ASME B36.10 (8-inch pipe), the NEMA P-base pattern for vertical motors, and the construction that pump makers' public manuals and ANSI/AWWA E103 describe for line-shaft pumps.
