An LNG loading arm, taken apart to show what we make

A 16-inch LNG marine loading arm with Class 150 flanges, taken apart the way a crew would in the yard, from the ship back to the jetty: the coupler lets go of the ship's flange, the flange nuts spin off and the triple swivel assembly and emergency release system come apart, the pantograph and cylinder pins come out, the outboard arm comes off, the swivels open, the counterweight plates slide off, then the inboard arm, the riser and finally the pedestal lift away. The bolting and pins we make are in colour. Press Solid view for a steel model, or Cutaway to see the product pipe inside the riser and the slew and trunnion swivels in section.

What's highlighted, and where it goes

    Riser & pedestal

    Pedestal anchor bolts

Anchor bolts cast into the jetty deck hold the pedestal's base plate down and carry the arm's whole overturning moment into the concrete.

Riser base flange studs & nuts

Heavy studs, a nut at each end, bolt the riser's base flange to the pedestal; everything above bears on this joint.

    Inlet flange studs & nuts

Sixteen 1 in. studs on a 21-1/4 in. bolt circle (ASME B16.5 Class 150, NPS 16) where the jetty's LNG line joins the arm. Austenitic stainless bolting, ASTM A320 B8 or B8M Class 2 with A194 8 or 8M nuts, is typical in LNG service.

    Swivels & arms

    Swivel flange studs & nuts

Each of the six swivels (slew, trunnion, apex and the three at the arm's end) is flanged into the pipework so it can be changed out: sixteen 1 in. studs per joint.

    Swivel bearing retainer bolts

A ring of cap screws round each swivel holds the retainer that keeps the ball races and product seals in the housing.

    Insulating flange studs & nuts

Studs in insulating sleeves, with insulating washers at both ends, in the flange that breaks electrical continuity between ship and shore.

    Balance & drive

    Counterweight bolts

Long studs clamp the stacked plates of the primary and secondary counterweights, so the arm can be balanced on site.

    Pantograph pins & keeper bolts

Pins at each end of the rigid link and at the lever's pivot, each held by a keeper plate and two bolts.

    Hydraulic cylinder pins

Pins through the eyes at both ends of the slew, inboard and outboard cylinders.

    Emergency release & coupler

    ERS flange studs & nuts

Bolt the two ball valves of the emergency release system into the vertical leg of the triple swivel assembly.

ERS valve body studs & nuts

Hold the stem and trunnion covers on the two ball valve bodies.

    Release collar pins

Hinge pins, latch pins and the shear pin of the three-segment powered release collar that clamps the two valves together.

QC/DC jaws, pins & clamp screws

Six machined jaws, each on its own pin and drawn in by a clamp screw, that hold the arm onto the ship's manifold flange.

A generic 16 in. LNG loading arm, not any maker's design. The product flanges, their studs and the elbows follow ASME B16.5 and B16.9; the riser and arms are drawn shorter than a real arm, and the swivels, emergency release system, coupler, counterweights, pantograph and pedestal are illustrative, with typical bolt counts and sizes. Stainless low-temperature bolting grades are typical for LNG service. Your drawings govern. We manufacture to your drawings and specifications.

Drawn to ASME B16.5 (16 in. Class 150 flanges and studs) and ASME B16.9 (elbows), and laid out after the OCIMF design and construction specification for marine loading arms and ISO 16904 for LNG transfer arms, as described in secondary sources.
