A railroad turnout, taken apart to show what we make

A No. 10 turnout in 136 RE rail on timber switch ties, taken apart the way a track gang does it: the track bolt nuts spin off and the joint bars come away, the switch rods are unbolted, the heel bolts are drawn and the switch points lifted out, the guard rails are unbolted, the rail-bound manganese frog is lifted out and stripped, and last the spikes are turned out and the rails lifted off their plates. Every bolt, nut, washer and spike we make is in colour. Press Solid view for a steel-and-timber model.

What's highlighted, and where it goes

    Rail joints

Track bolts, nuts & spring washers

Heat-treated button-head, oval-neck track bolts to ASTM A183, 1-1/8 in. × 6-1/2 in., with square nuts and spring washers. Six per pair of 36 in. joint bars through 1-1/4 in. holes drilled 3-1/2, 9-1/2 and 15-1/2 in. from each rail end: at both stock rail joints and all four ends of the frog.

    Insulated joint bolts

High-strength bolts with hardened washers and insulating bushings through the bonded insulated joints that split the signal circuits in the closure rails.

    Switch

    Switch stand lag screws

Hold the hand-throw switch stand down on its two headblock ties.

    Switch rod & clip bolts

1 in. bolts fix the switch clips to the point webs, the rods to the clips and the connecting rod between the head rod and the stand.

    Point stop bolts

3/4 in. bolts hold each stop to the web of its switch point, two per stop.

    Heel block bolts

Five per heel through the joint bar, the point and closure rail, the heel block and the stock rail.

    Frog & guard rails

    RBM frog bolts

Fourteen 1-3/8 in. Grade 8 square-head bolts with head locks, hardened washers and security lock nuts through the wing rails, heel rails and fillers of the rail-bound manganese frog.

    Guard rail bolts

Heat-treated bolts with lock nuts through the running rail, separator blocks and guard rail opposite the frog, holding the 1-7/8 in. flangeway.

    Tie plates

    Screw spikes (lag screws)

15/16 in. × 6-1/2 in. square-head screw spikes to ASTM A66 through 1 in. plate holes, holding every switch, turnout, frog and guard rail plate to the timber ties.

    Cut spikes (plain track)

5/8 in. × 6 in. cut spikes to ASTM A65 on the plain track ahead of the switch: two rail-holding and two plate-holding per plate.

A generic No. 10 right-hand turnout, not any railroad's or supplier's design, lined for the straight route. The 136 RE rail section, the joint drilling and track bolt size, standard gauge, the 16 ft 6 in. switch with its 6-1/4 in. heel spread and 4-3/4 in. throw, the 1-7/8 in. flangeways, the frog bolt size and count and the spike sizes follow published figures. The lead, the frog toe and heel lengths, the joint bar section, heel blocks, guard rail bolting, switch stand, clips, rods, stops and plate lengths are illustrative typical proportions, and the other counts are typical; screw spike and cut spike counts are for the ties drawn. Rail anchors and the elastic rail clips on the turnout plates are spring steel and drawn in line only. Your railroad's standards and drawings govern. We manufacture to your drawings and specifications.

Drawn to the 136 RE rail section and joint drilling, AREMA-style turnout practice (AREMA Manual chapters 4 and 5 and the Portfolio of Trackwork Plans, as reproduced in published turnout standards), ASTM A183 (track bolts and nuts), ASTM A66 (screw spikes) and ASTM A65 (cut spikes).
