A reactor coolant pump, taken apart joint by joint

A generic shaft-seal reactor coolant pump of a pressurised water reactor, drawn from public documents: a vertical, single-stage pump standing 28.5 ft tall, with a 31 in. suction nozzle below, a 27.5 in. discharge nozzle to the side, a three-stage seal package and a motor with a flywheel on top. It comes apart in the order of a seal and pump inspection: the small-bore flanges are opened, the motor is unbolted and lifted, the stand, coupling and seal package come off, the main flange nuts spin off and the studs are drawn, and the thermal barrier, shaft and impeller lift out of the casing, which stays welded in the loop piping. The studs, nuts, bolts and pins are in colour. Press Solid view for a steel model, or Cutaway to see the casing wall, impeller, diffuser, thermal barrier, main flange and seals in section.

What's highlighted, and where it goes

    Pump

    Main flange studs & nuts

The ring of large studs that clamps the main flange and thermal barrier to the casing over the gasket. Shown as 24 studs of 4-1/2 in., threaded into the casing flange, each with a nut and washer; the number and size follow the pump drawing. Typically SA-540 Grade B23 or B24.

    Seal housing bolts

Hold the seal housing, with the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 shaft seals inside it, down on the top of the main flange. Illustrative count and size.

    Small-bore flange studs & nuts

On the flanged connections for seal injection, seal leak-off and component cooling water. Illustrative: four joints of four studs.

    Motor and coupling

    Motor stand bolts

Bolt the foot of the motor support stand to the main flange. Illustrative count and size.

    Coupling bolts & nuts

Join the removable spool piece to the pump and motor half couplings. Illustrative: two joints of eight.

    Motor hold-down bolts & nuts

Hold the motor's lower flange on the top flange of the stand. Illustrative count and size.

    Supports

Support column & tie rod pins

Headed pins through the clevises of the columns that carry the casing and the tie rods that steady it. Illustrative arrangement; not disturbed at a normal inspection.

    Tie rods & nuts

Threaded rods with a clevis at each end between a casing lug and the building structure. Illustrative arrangement.

A generic pump, not any plant's or maker's design. The arrangement (casing welded into the loop, main flange, thermal barrier and heat exchanger, three shaft seals in a housing bolted to the main flange, spool-piece coupling, motor bearings and flywheel, support pads on the casing), the overall height and the suction and discharge nozzle bores follow public regulator documents. The number, size and length of the main flange studs, every other bolt count and size, the flange, casing, impeller, seal, stand and motor shapes, the small-bore flanges and the whole support arrangement are illustrative, typical proportions, and the bolting material is typical. Shown to describe the joints only; your drawings and your quality requirements govern. We manufacture to your drawings and specifications.

Drawn from public regulator documents (a pressurised water reactor training manual and a pump stress-report summary) for the arrangement, overall height and nozzle sizes; the main flange bolting material is named to ASME SA-540 as typical.
