An axially split multistage pump, taken apart to show what we make

A 6 × 8, six-stage API 610 type BB3 pump (8-inch suction, 6-inch discharge, Class 900 nozzles) of the kind used for pipeline, boiler feed and water injection service, on its baseplate with motor and spacer coupling. It comes apart the way a pump shop does it: coupling spacer out, nozzle flanges and balance line open, bearing housings drawn off, seal gland plates back, then the cap nuts (round body, hex drive on top) spin off the long row of casing studs and the upper half lifts away, leaving the studs standing in the lower half. The rotor, with its six opposed impellers, wear rings and centre bushing, lifts straight out; the hold-down bolts, dowels and anchor nuts come last. The bolting we make is in colour. Press Solid view for a steel model, or Cutaway to open the upper half and see the rotor inside.

What's highlighted, and where it goes

    Pressure casing

Casing split studs & cap nuts (round body, hex drive on top)

A long row of large studs set in the lower casing half, each with a tall cap nut (round body, hex drive on top) standing proud of the upper flange: the pump's main pressure joint. The studs stay in the lower half when the upper half is lifted.

Jacking screws & joint taper pins

Jacking screws in the upper flange break the joint once the nuts are off; taper pins put the upper half back in the same place.

    Suction flange studs & nuts

Twelve 1-3/8 in. studs on a 15-1/2 in. bolt circle (ASME B16.5 Class 900, NPS 8), each with two heavy hex nuts.

    Discharge flange studs & nuts

Twelve 1-1/8 in. studs on a 12-1/2 in. bolt circle (ASME B16.5 Class 900, NPS 6), each with two heavy hex nuts.

Balance line flange studs & nuts

Eight 7/8 in. studs on a 6-1/2 in. bolt circle at each end of the balance line (ASME B16.5 Class 900 / 1500, NPS 2).

    Seals & bearings

    Seal gland studs & nuts

Four studs and nuts in each seal chamber face, holding the cartridge seal's gland plate at each end of the pump.

Bearing housing studs, nuts & dowels

Four studs and nuts bolt each bearing housing to the saddle on the lower casing half; dowel pins keep the rotor centred.

    Bearing end cover bolts

Hold the inboard and outboard covers on the radial and thrust bearing housings.

    Coupling

    Coupling bolts & nuts

Eight per disc pack on the spacer coupling. With them out the spacer lifts away and the motor stays where it is.

    Mounting

    Hold-down bolts & taper dowels

Two bolts through each casing foot into the pedestals, and a taper dowel in each drive-end foot to hold the alignment.

    Baseplate anchor bolts

Cast into the foundation, eight a side, each with a nut and washer on the baseplate flange.

A generic 6 × 8 six-stage BB3 pump, not any maker's design. The suction, discharge and balance line flanges, their studs and gaskets follow ASME B16.5 and B16.20 (Class 900); the take-apart order, the four studs on each bearing housing and each seal gland, and the taper dowels in the drive-end feet follow published BB3 practice. The casing, rotor, impellers, seals, bearing housings, coupling, motor and baseplate are illustrative typical proportions, and the casing split, jacking screw, end cover, coupling, hold-down and anchor bolt counts and sizes are typical. Your drawings govern. We manufacture to your drawings and specifications.

Drawn to ASME B16.5 (Class 900 nozzle and balance line flanges and their studs), ASME B16.20 (flange gaskets) and the API 610 type BB3 layout, with the take-apart order of published BB3 maintenance manuals.
