A submarine, taken apart to show what we make

A generic single-shaft diesel-electric submarine with a cruciform stern, drawn as an outline round its bolted joints: a 305 mm (12 in.) tail shaft, a 250 mm shaft line and 200 mm rudder stocks. It comes apart from the stern the way a fitter does it: the cap nuts spin off and the propeller cap comes away, then the propeller nut and the propeller off its taper, the stern tube gland and seal housing, the fitted bolts out of the shaft couplings, the rudders and stern planes off their stocks and the bearings opened, then the hatches, casing plates, valves and machinery mounts. The bolting we make is in colour. Press Solid view for a steel model.

What's highlighted, and where it goes

    Propeller & shaft line

    Propeller nut

Holds the propeller up on the 1:15 shaft taper; locked, and sealed inside the filled propeller cap. Its thread is at least 60 % of the taper's big end.

    Propeller cap studs & nuts

A ring of studs in the after face of the boss holding the cone-shaped cap, in a corrosion-resistant alloy such as nickel-copper K-500 (typical).

Stern tube seal studs & nuts

Twelve studs hold the seal housing to the inboard stern tube flange; four gland studs compress the packing.

    Shaft coupling bolts & nuts

Eight fitted bolts with locked nuts in each flange coupling: 50 mm by the classification rule formula for a 250 mm shaft, in 55 mm flanges.

    Rudders & planes

    Rudder & stern-plane coupling bolts

Six fitted bolts, the rule minimum, joining each control surface to its stock: 52 mm by the rule formula for a 200 mm stock.

    Stock bearing housing bolts

A ring of eight bolts holding each stock's split bearing housing to its seat in the hull.

    Sail-plane bearing & actuator bolts

Bolts for the sail planes' bearing housings in the sail walls and their actuator brackets inside the sail.

    Hatches, casing & hull fittings

    Hatch hinge & seal-ring bolting

Hinge bracket bolts, the hinge pin and the cap screws holding each hatch's sealing ring on its seat.

    Deck casing panel bolts

Bolts holding the portable plates in the free-flooding casing, in a corrosion-resistant alloy.

    Sail fairing panel bolts

Bolts round the removable fairing panels in the sides of the sail.

Ballast tank vent valve studs & nuts

Studs and nuts holding each main ballast tank vent valve to its pad on the hull.

Sea-water hull valve studs & nuts

Studs and nuts holding each sea-water hull valve to its insert in the hull.

    Machinery mounts

    Diesel generator mount bolts

Bolts and centre studs fixing the generator raft's resilient mounts to the foundation and to the raft.

    Propulsion motor mount bolts

The same arrangement under the propulsion motor: base bolts into the seating, a centre stud up into the motor foot.

A generic illustration, not any navy's, class's, builder's or maker's design, and nothing beyond textbook general arrangement is shown; the hull is an outline in illustrative proportions. The shaft coupling bolts and flanges, the propeller taper and nut thread and the rudder couplings follow published classification rule formulas for the shaft and stock sizes chosen; everything else, including the other fastener counts and all materials, is typical. Your drawings govern. We manufacture to your drawings and specifications.

Coupling bolts, flanges, the propeller taper and nut thread and the rudder couplings are sized from published merchant-ship classification rules for shafting, propeller fitting and rudder couplings (IACS UR S10 among them); materials are typical, from ASTM F467 and F468.
