Manway eyebolts and nuts, fittings plate and valve studs, bottom outlet bolting, safety appliance fasteners and draft keys, made in Houston to your drawings and specifications.
A jacketed general-purpose tank car of the DOT-117 type, about 30,000 gallons, taken apart the way a tank car shop strips one for requalification: the manway nuts are slackened, the eyebolts swing out and the cover swings open; the protective housing, the valves and the fittings plate come off the top; the relief valve comes off its nozzle; the bottom outlet valve drops out between its skids; the brake equipment, platform and ladders are unbolted; the head shields and the upper jacket come away; and the tank lifts off its trucks. The fasteners we make are in colour. Press Solid view for a steel model, or Cutaway to see the tank wall, the insulation space and jacket, the manway nozzle and the bottom outlet valve in section.
Eight swing bolts pinned to lugs on the 20 in. manway nozzle, dropping into 1-1/64 in. slots on a 23-7/8 in. bolt circle in the hinged cover. Slackened and swung out every time the car is loaded through the manway.
A ring of studs and nuts (twelve, typical) clamps the fittings plate to its nozzle flange over a gasket.
Studs in the fittings plate hold the liquid valve, the vapour valve and the vacuum relief valve: four each, typical.
Hold the housing that protects the valves if the car rolls over.
Four studs through a flange drilled with 7/8 in. holes on a 6-1/4 in. bolt circle hold the pressure relief valve on its nozzle.
Studs in the saddle under the tank carry the bottom outlet valve (eight, typical).
Four bolts on a 7-3/4 in. bolt circle hold the 4 in. outlet nozzle and its cap under the valve.
Fasten the platform, handrails and ladders. 49 CFR Part 231 calls for bolts or rivets not less than 1/2 in.; two-piece lock bolts are widely used.
Round the rim of each 1/2 in. full-height head shield and along the jacket seam, where those are bolted rather than welded.
Hold the air reservoir, control valve and brake cylinder to brackets on the tank.
The cross key that ties each coupler to its yoke through the stub sill, and the retainer that keeps it in.
Clamp the carrier plate that holds the yoke and draft gear up in each stub sill.
Two bolts per side bearing on the truck bolsters, and the pins of the truck brake levers.

The shell and head thickness, jacket gauge and head shield thickness follow 49 CFR Part 179; the car's overall size follows published data sheets for cars of this capacity; the manway cover slots and bolt circle, the relief valve flange drilling and the outlet nozzle drilling follow fittings makers' published data. Everything else is illustrative typical proportions: the nozzles, fittings plate, valves, housing, bottom outlet valve and skid, sills, bolsters, draft gear, couplers, trucks, brake equipment, platform and ladders, and the insulation space. All other bolt counts and sizes are typical, and jackets are often welded where a bolted seam is drawn. Your drawings govern. We manufacture to your drawings and specifications.
Drawn to 49 CFR Part 179 (the DOT-117 specification: 9/16 in. shell and heads, 11 gauge jacket, 1/2 in. full-height head shields) and 49 CFR Part 231 (safety appliances), with the manway cover, relief valve flange and outlet nozzle drilling taken from fittings and valve makers' published data sheets; the AAR Manual of Standards M-1002 is referred to only as those sources cite it.
