A water main and hydrant, taken apart to show what we make

A short run of buried 8-inch ductile iron water main with a 6-inch fire hydrant lead, taken apart the way a crew does it: the flange and coupling nuts spin off and the line pulls apart, the nuts come off the tee-head bolts and the glands slide back so the tee, gate valve and restrained bend leave the pipe, the tie rods slide out of their eye bolts and the hydrant comes off its lead, then the hydrant unbolts at its bonnet, breakaway flange and shoe and the valve bonnet lifts with its stem and wedge. The bolting we make is in colour. Press Solid view for an iron model, or Cutaway to see the gaskets and glands in section and the inside of the valve and hydrant.

What's highlighted, and where it goes

    Mechanical joints

    Tee-head bolts & nuts

Six per joint on the tee, gate valve, bend and hydrant shoe: 3/4 in. × 4 in. on the 8 in. joints (11-3/4 in. bolt circle) and 3/4 in. × 3-1/2 in. on the 6 in. joints, to ANSI/AWWA C111/A21.11. The tee head seats behind the bell flange and the nut draws the gland onto the gasket.

    Restraint gland wedge bolts

Drive the wedges of the restraint glands onto the pipe at the bend, so thrust cannot pull the joint apart.

    Eye bolts & nuts

Take the place of two tee-head bolts at each end of the hydrant lead and carry the tie rods.

    Tie rods & nuts

Threaded rods through the eye bolts that tie the hydrant shoe back to the tee.

    Valve & hydrant

    Valve bonnet bolts & nuts

Clamp the bonnet to the body of the resilient-seated gate valve.

    Hydrant bonnet bolts & nuts

Hold the bonnet and operating nut on the upper barrel.

    Breakaway flange bolts & nuts

Join the upper and lower barrels at the ground line, where a traffic hydrant is made to part if it is struck.

    Hydrant shoe bolts & nuts

Bolt the buried lower barrel to the shoe at the foot of the hydrant.

    Line

    Coupling bolts & nuts

Draw the end rings of a bolted sleeve coupling together over its gaskets; repair clamps use the same bolting.

    Flange bolts & nuts

Eight 3/4 in. × 3-1/2 in. bolts on an 11-3/4 in. bolt circle (AWWA C115 flange, ASME B16.1 Class 125 drilling, 8 in.) over a full-face gasket.

A generic 8 in. main with a 6 in. hydrant lead, not any maker's design. The mechanical joints and tee-head bolts, the tee and bend lengths and the flange and its bolts follow ANSI/AWWA C111, C153 and C115 with ASME B16.1 Class 125 drilling; the valve, valve box, hydrant, coupling, restraint glands, eye bolts and pipe wall are illustrative typical proportions, and the valve, hydrant, coupling, wedge bolt and tie rod counts and sizes are typical. Your drawings govern. We manufacture to your drawings and specifications.

    Drawn to ANSI/AWWA C111/A21.11 (mechanical joints and tee-head bolts), C153/A21.53 (compact fittings), C115/A21.15 with ASME B16.1 Class 125 drilling (flanges), C502 (dry-barrel hydrants) and C509 / C515 (resilient-seated gate valves).
