Studs turned from heat-treated bar carry the bar's test results, unless the finished size falls in a different band of the strength table (ASTM A962). Turn a B7 bar over 2-1/2 in. down to a 2-1/2 in. stud and the minimum tensile strength goes from 115 to 125 ksi, so the studs themselves must be tested. Turning also takes off the outside of the bar: where carbon or alloy steel studs are threaded on bar within 0.06 in. (1.5 mm) of the thread size, the thread is formed in the bar's own surface, and A962 asks for a decarburization test on each lot.

model dataExample part: a 1 in.-8 UNC double-end stud 5 in. long, turned from 1-1/4 in. bar, with its body reduced to ASME B18.31.2 (reduced body 0.910–0.983 in., full body 0.983–1.000 in.). Studs are pointed (ASTM A962); the 45° chamfer is taken to just below the thread root. Cutting directions follow chip-flow physics: the turning surface runs into the tool's rake face. The lathe is drawn as a generic slant-bed turning centre with a round disc turret behind the centre line, so the tools are held rake face down. Lathe, collet, turret and tools are generic; spindle speed and feeds are not shown to time.
