ETD150 Elevated-Temperature-Drawn Steel
A 4100-series alloy steel drawn at elevated temperature to 150 ksi tensile minimum with no heat treatment — for shafts, studs and hydraulic components machined straight from the bar.
What ETD150 is.
e.t.d. 150® is a proprietary Niagara LaSalle bar: a medium-carbon 4100-series alloy steel with a machinability additive and controlled nitrogen, drawn through specially designed dies at an elevated temperature. It arrives at 150 ksi tensile and 130 ksi yield minimum, so parts machined from it need no heat treatment, straightening, grinding or cleaning, with minimal warpage. The producer aims it at parts that would otherwise be heat treated to about 32 to 38 HRC and rates its machinability at about 75 percent of 1212.
We machine ETD150 shafts, studs, tie rods and hydraulic components from certified bar in the as-drawn condition and induction harden the surface where a wear face is needed.
Chemical composition.
| Element | Symbol | Min % | Max % |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon | C | 0.40 | — |
| Manganese | Mn | 0.70 | 1.10 |
| Silicon | Si | 0.15 | 0.35 |
| Chromium | Cr | 0.80 | 1.20 |
| Molybdenum | Mo | 0.15 | 0.25 |
Per Niagara LaSalle’s e.t.d. 150® datasheet. The producer adds one machinability agent (tellurium, selenium, sulfur or others) and controls nitrogen; it publishes no carbon maximum and no phosphorus or sulfur limits.
Mechanical properties.
| Condition and size | Tensile strength, min (ksi) | Yield strength 0.2% offset, min (ksi) | Elongation, min (%) | Reduction of area, min (%) | Hardness, min |

| As drawn, rounds 5/16 to 3-9/16 in. | 150 | 130 | 5 | 20 | 302 HB (32 HRC) |
Producer’s guaranteed minimums, the same for every size. Where hardness and tensile results disagree, tensile governs. Niagara LaSalle’s datasheet covers rounds 5/16 to 3-9/16 in.; its web page lists 7/16 to 3-1/2 in.

What is ETD150?
e.t.d. 150® is a medium-carbon 4100-series alloy steel given its strength by the drawing process rather than by quenching and tempering. Niagara LaSalle draws the bar through specially designed dies at an elevated temperature, leaving a bright, straight product at 150 ksi minimum that machines at about 75 percent of 1212. It replaces heat-treated alloy bar in shafts, studs, pins and hydraulic parts where a separate heat-treat step, and the straightening and cleanup that follow it, add cost.
Testing, certification and marking
- Hardness tested per lot; tensile on request or where the specification requires it
- Bars eddy-current tested by the producer
- Manufacturer's identification and heat number on every piece where size allows
- EN 10204 3.1 material test report with heat number and chemistry
- PMI verification on request
AISI 4140 Alloy Steel (UNS G41400)
The workhorse Cr-Mo steel behind B7, L7 and Grade 7 — the bar stock for studs, shafts, couplings and any part that needs 100 to 150 ksi and good toughness.
ASTM A108 / A29 / A311 bar1144 Free-Machining Carbon Steel (UNS G11440)
Medium-carbon free-machining steel that is strong straight from the bar: about 108 ksi cold drawn, machines well, hardens by induction — the Stressproof® family grade for shafts and studs without heat treatment.
ASTM A108 cold-finished bar · chemistry per ASTM A29 / SAE J4031045 Carbon Steel (UNS G10450)
The medium-carbon workhorse: hardenable by quench and temper, induction hardenable at the surface, strong as drawn — for shafts, axles, studs, gears and hydraulic components.
