ASTM F1554 Grades 36, 55 and 105 Anchor Bolts
The anchor-bolt specification: Grade 36 carbon steel, Grade 55 weldable higher strength, and Grade 105 quenched-and-tempered alloy — straight, bent or headed, plain or galvanized, ½ to 4 in. (Grade 105 to 3 in.)
What F1554 36 / 55 / 105 is.
ASTM F1554 covers anchor bolts for concrete foundations in three grades named for their minimum yield strength: 36 ksi carbon steel, 55 ksi with a weldable supplementary option, and 105 ksi quenched-and-tempered alloy steel. The specification defines hooked, headed and straight bolts, thread classes, galvanizing allowances and colour coding of the ends: blue for 36, yellow for 55 and red for 105.
We machine and bend F1554 anchor bolts to drawing, thread them to Class 1A or 2A, hot-dip galvanize the projecting end or the whole bolt, and supply them with A563 nuts and F436 washers.
Chemical composition.
| Element | Symbol | Min % | Max % |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon, Grade 36 | C | — | 0.25 |
| Manganese, Grade 36 over ⅞ in. | Mn | — | 0.90 |
| Phosphorus, all grades | P | — | 0.04 |
| Sulfur, all grades | S | — | 0.05 |
| Copper (when specified) | Cu | 0.20 | — |
Values per ASTM F1554-20 Table 1 (verified against the specification). Confirm the edition called out on your purchase order with our estimating team. Grades 55 and 105 are controlled by mechanical properties; only P, S and optional Cu are limited.

What is F1554?
F1554 replaced the practice of ordering anchor bolts as A36 rod or A307 bolts with a specification written for the job. The three grades cover the range of foundation loads, the geometry rules cover hooks, heads and threads, and the colour code lets an inspector tell grades apart on site. Grade 55 with supplementary requirement S1 is the weldable option for anchor bolts that will be welded to plates or repaired in the field.
Testing, certification and marking
- Tensile and yield tested per heat and size; bend test on hooked bolts
- Grade colour on the projecting end; manufacturer's identification on the head or end
- Certificate of conformance or test report with heat number
- Galvanizing thickness reported when coated
ASTM A36 Structural Carbon Steel
The structural steel: 36 ksi yield, 58 to 80 ksi tensile, weldable and available in every shape — for anchor bolts, stay rods, U-bolts, plates and brackets made from bar and plate.
ASTM A354 Grade BCASTM A354 Grade BC Bolts (125 ksi)
Alloy steel bolting between Grade 5 and Grade 8: 125 ksi tensile and 109 ksi yield in sizes to 2½ in., 115 ksi above — the anchor-bolt and large-stud grade that holds its strength in big diameters.
ASTM A307 · SAE J429 Grade 2 equivalentASTM A307 Grade A and B Bolts (60 ksi)
The general-purpose carbon steel bolt: 60 ksi tensile, not heat treated, weldable and galvanizable — Grade A for general use, Grade B for flanged pipe joints with a 100 ksi cap.
