Washers spread the load under a nut or bolt head, protect the joint surface and, in the case of wedge-lock washers, stop the joint loosening under vibration. SAE and USS washers differ in outside diameter and thickness under ASME B18.21.1; hardened washers are used under structural and high-strength bolts.
