1117 Free-Machining Carbon Steel (UNS G11170)
Low-carbon steel with added sulfur and manganese for fast machining and a good carburized case — the screw-machine grade for case-hardened pins, gears and fittings.
What 1117 is.
1117 is a resulfurized low-carbon steel. Sulfur at 0.08 to 0.13 percent forms manganese sulfides that break chips, so it machines much faster than 1018, and the higher manganese improves the hardness of a carburized case. It is the classic screw-machine grade for parts that are turned in volume and then case hardened. Not for pressure-boundary, structural, fatigue-loaded or low-temperature bolting.
We run 1117 on the Swiss and CNC lathes for pins, fittings, bushings and small components, and carburize and harden to the drawing.

Mechanical properties.
| Condition (¾–1¼ in. round) | Tensile strength, typical (ksi) | Yield strength 0.2% offset, typical (ksi) | Elongation, typical (%) | Reduction of area, typical (%) | Hardness, typical |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cold drawn | 69 | 58 | 15 | 40 | 137 HB |
Typical values for cold-drawn bar, confirmed by Niagara LaSalle and AZoM (Alro’s 1-in. mill average is 69 / 58 ksi). ASTM A108 sets no mechanical requirements, so order to a stated minimum where one matters.

What is 1117 steel?
1117 is 1018's free-machining cousin. Sulfur forms soft inclusions that act as chip breakers and internal lubricant, cutting cycle time and improving finish, while the higher manganese gives the steel a deeper, harder carburized case than 1018. It is not a welding grade, and like other free-machining steels it is notch sensitive with low impact strength at low temperature, so it is used for machined parts in volume rather than structural or fatigue-critical work.
Testing, certification and marking
- Hardness tested per lot; tensile on request or where the specification requires it
- Manufacturer's identification and heat number on every piece where size allows
- EN 10204 3.1 material test report with heat number and chemistry
- PMI verification on request
1018 Carbon Steel (UNS G10180)
The everyday machining steel: low carbon, easily welded and case hardened, cold drawn for a clean finish — for pins, spacers, brackets and non-critical machined parts.
ASTM A108 / A29 / A311 bar1144 Free-Machining Carbon Steel (UNS G11440)
Medium-carbon free-machining steel that is strong straight from the bar: about 108 ksi cold drawn, machines well, hardens by induction — the Stressproof® family grade for shafts and studs without heat treatment.
ASTM A108 / A29 bar12L14 Leaded Free-Machining Steel (UNS G12144)
The fastest-machining steel there is: lead, sulfur and phosphorus give short chips and a bright finish at high speed — for high-volume screw-machine fittings, pins and adapters in light duty.
