Naval Brass C46400
The marine brass — 1 percent tin for seawater resistance — and the ASTM F468 structural brass fastener alloy (F468D).
What C46400 Naval Brass is.
Naval brass C46400 is a 60-40 brass with about 1 percent tin. The tin markedly improves resistance to dezincification and seawater corrosion, which is why the alloy has been used for marine hardware, condenser plates and propeller shafts for more than a century. It is hot workable, machines well and is the brass listed in ASTM F468 for bolts and studs.
We machine naval brass fasteners and components from certified B21 rod and certify them to F468 (marking F468D) and F467 (F467D).

What is naval brass?
Naval brass is Muntz metal, the 60-40 copper-zinc alloy, with roughly 1 percent tin. Zinc-rich brasses lose zinc in seawater and leave behind a porous copper sponge; the tin addition suppresses that dezincification and gives the alloy its marine reputation. It is stronger than the single-phase alpha brasses, forges well when hot and machines at about 30 percent of the free-cutting rating.
As a fastener
ASTM F468 lists naval brass as Cu 464 with marking F468D: 50 to 80 ksi full-size tensile, 15 ksi yield and 55 to 75 HRB. Nuts are F467D with a 50 ksi proof stress. Those are modest numbers, so naval brass fasteners are chosen for corrosion resistance, non-sparking behaviour and appearance rather than load; for higher strength in the same environment use silicon bronze or nickel-aluminum bronze.
Testing, certification and marking
- Tensile and hardness tested per lot on the finished product
- Grade or alloy marking F468D on bolts and F467D on nuts and manufacturer's identification on every piece
- EN 10204 3.1 material test report with heat number and chemistry; 3.2 witness available
- Alloy identified by UNS number on the certificate
