What are finished hex nuts?
The finished hex nut is the general-purpose pattern — chamfered faces, standard across-flats and thickness proportions, made to ASME B18.2.2. It mates with hex bolts and cap screws everywhere the heavy series is not specified.
- Standard pattern — lighter than heavy hex
- Machined or hot-forged in-house
- Tapped class 2B or 3B
- Every A194 grade plus stainless and exotics
Finished hex vs. heavy hex
Same thread, different section: the heavy hex nut runs about an eighth of an inch wider across the flats and noticeably thicker. General-purpose joints use finished; high-strength studs and pressure joints specify heavy. When in doubt, the stud grade decides — ask us.

Tips for purchasing
- Match nut grade to bolt grade — we certify sets together.
- Galvanized bolts need oversize-tapped nuts.
- Consider jam nuts for locking stacks — thin nut under full nut.
- Proof-load testing and full material test reports available.
