410 Stainless Steel (UNS S41000)

The basic hardenable stainless: 12 percent chromium, heat treatable to 120 ksi and beyond, magnetic, and corrosion resistant in mild atmospheres — for valve trim, pump parts and high-strength stainless bolts.

Material overview

What 410 Stainless is.

Type 410 is a martensitic stainless steel with about 12 percent chromium and enough carbon to harden by quenching and tempering. Unlike the austenitic grades it is magnetic, can be heat treated to strength levels that rival alloy steel, and has only moderate corrosion resistance, adequate for fresh water, steam and mild atmospheres but not chlorides. Hardness and strength are set by the tempering temperature.

We machine 410 fasteners and components from certified A276 bar and heat treat to the condition ordered: A276 Condition T or H for bar, and F593 Alloy Group 5 conditions H or HT for bolts. For high-temperature pressure bolting the related 12-chrome grade is ASTM A193 B6.

Values per ASTM F593-24 Table 2, full-size tests (verified against the specification). Yield is 0.2 % offset; hardness is Rockwell. Machined-specimen limits differ slightly.

Heat treatmentAnnealed at about 1500 to 1650 °F. Hardened by austenitizing at 1700 to 1850 °F, oil or air quenching, and tempering: 1050 °F and above for Condition T / F593 H (best toughness and corrosion resistance), 525 to 700 °F for Condition H / F593 HT (maximum strength; F593 sets 525 °F as the minimum HT temper). Tempering between 700 and 1050 °F is avoided because toughness and corrosion resistance both fall.

The buyer’s guide

What is 410 stainless steel?

410 is the general-purpose martensitic stainless. With 11.5 to 13.5 percent chromium it is just stainless enough to resist rusting in mild atmospheres and steam, and with 0.08 to 0.15 percent carbon it transforms to martensite on quenching, so it can be heat treated like an alloy steel. It is magnetic in every condition and its corrosion resistance is best after a high-temperature temper and a polish.

Choosing the condition

  • Annealed (A276 Condition A): 70 ksi, for machining and where strength does not matter.
  • Tempered 1050 °F and above (A276 Condition T, F593 H): 100 ksi minimum in bar, 110 to 140 ksi as F593 bolts, with good toughness. The usual choice for bolts and valve parts.
  • Tempered low (A276 Condition H, F593 HT): 120 ksi minimum in bar, 160 to 190 ksi as F593 bolts, for wear parts and highly loaded fasteners, at some cost in toughness.
  • Never temper between 700 and 1050 °F: the alloy embrittles and loses corrosion resistance in that range.

Testing, certification and marking

  • Tensile and hardness tested per lot on the finished product
  • Grade or marking symbol F593P or F593R and manufacturer's identification on every piece
  • EN 10204 3.1 material test report with heat number and chemistry; 3.2 witness available
  • PMI verification on request
